Recommendations in the resume have become a familiar concept for the job market. And each applicant considers it necessary to collect positive reviews about himself. This article will show whether recommendations are really that important, who is the best to ask for them, and how to correctly form them on a resume.
Recommendations are the reviews of previous employers about the applicant. They contain a brief description of professional skills, achievements, success during study, work. Recommendations on a resume increase your chances of success in employment.
But don’t overestimate the weight of such reviews. Surveys have shown that half of the employers do not attach importance to written or oral characteristics. Although the same number of companies hold a different opinion – recommendations are needed, most often they choose the candidate who provided such information.
It is definitely not worth writing recommendations to yourself, because recommendations are checked. Most companies do this selectively, but there are organizations where resumes are scrutinized in the most thorough way, including for the authenticity of reviews. Most often they call in given cases:
- the recruiter doubts the veracity of the candidate’s words;
- the applicant is applying for a managerial position;
- you need to choose from several applicants;
- there is doubt that the recommendations are real.
When calling, potential employers are primarily interested in the reasons for dismissal from work, in second place – skills, experience, as well as the psychological makeup of the personality and character.
Any person from the team can write a letter of recommendation. But you need to consider whose opinion recruiters listen to the most, and this:
- the direct superior of the applicant;
- the CEO of the company.
A student can request a recommendation signed by the dean of the faculty, head of industrial practice, university teacher, researchers.
When providing letters of recommendation or contacts for communication, you need to know that past employers often speak badly of former employees. Therefore, you need to think carefully about who can provide a positive recommendation. In addition, the recommendations of former colleagues do not inspire much confidence in hiring specialists.
There are several types of recommendations, and each must be correctly indicated. Employers who value employee reviews believe that two or three recommendations in a resume are enough.
Written reviews are not particularly trusted for several reasons:
- often applicants write them themselves;
- The review is written at the end of the cooperation (voluntary dismissal, downsizing), and is often part of a “settlement agreement”.
Nevertheless, the presence of such a document will not hurt. The letter of recommendation is in free form. It evaluates the professionalism of the applicant, achievements, describes the benefits for the company.
Experience shows that HR managers consider the information received in live communication to be more reliable. And if you have good relations with the previous management, you can leave his or her contacts in the “Recommendations” column. Indicate the following information:
- last name, first name, patronymic;
- phone, e-mail;
- name of organization, enterprise, in where the referee works.
What if there are no reviews from past jobs? Then the column is left blank or they write: “I have not asked for recommendations before.” The main thing is not to come up with recommendations in your resume , because the truth will come up anyway, and deception can ruin your career.
