What reason for dismissal to indicate in the resume?

It is possible not to indicate in the resume the reason for dismissal from the previous job. Nobody will oblige you to do this if you don’t want to. However, this question will most likely come up in the interview, so the answer to it, in any case, should be thought out in advance. Consider the main reasons for dismissal in the resume.

To emphasize the importance of this point, just look at the results of a survey of Russian employers. Thus, 92% of respondents ask candidates about the reasons for dismissal from previous jobs. 6% answered that it depends on the position for which the applicant is applying. And only 2% noted that there is no point in asking, since it is unlikely that the candidate will tell the truth. The most common reasons for dismissal in the resume are:

  1. “Of their own free will”. This is a non-speaking formulation that will surely raise additional questions. “Own desire” can include many reasons, ranging from conflicts with colleagues or bosses and ending with the reluctance of the personnel department to file a dismissal under the article of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation.
  2. “Due to the current circumstances.” The same problem is not informative. The circumstances can mean anything.
  3. “Low salary.” In some cases, the reason is appropriate, however, such an argument should be handled with extreme caution. The bosses may like the ambitiousness and dedication of their employees, but few people need a specialist who is ready to run away to competitors at any time for the sake of a couple of extra thousand a month.
  4. “Problems in the workforce” and “disagreement with the leadership” need further clarification. The employer will certainly want to get them, so as not to accidentally take the source of conflict situations to his work.

All of these reasons require further clarification. About 2.5% of applicants answer even to a directly asked question “I don’t want to talk about it”. And they naturally receive a refusal from the employer.

When asked what to write in the reason for the dismissal in the resume, HR experts recommend:

  • If possible, it is better not to write anything, but be prepared to answer additional questions from the recruiter. It is worth indicating the reason only in two cases: if it is beneficial for you, and if these are the requirements of the employer.
  • If you write, then limit yourself to writing in the labor book without mentioning controversial points. It is better to present your version of events at an interview later.
  • Tell the truth, but try to present it in a favorable light for yourself.

So, we figured out what to write “low wages fee ”,“ heavy loads ”or“ no increase ”is not worth it. It remains to consider the options that would suit the potential employer. Here are some arguments suitable for a resume and interview:

  1. Change of leadership. The phenomenon of “a new broom sweeps in a new way” is found everywhere. No one will be surprised that a new company owner or head of the department is laying off old employees in order to recruit their team. The reason is objective and does not say anything bad about you as a specialist.
  2. “Lack of professional development opportunities”. This sounds better than “no career advancement”, especially if you worked in your last job for several months. It is good when an employee seeks to develop and grow professionally, but the employer certainly does not need a person who, in six months, will begin to demand an increase in his position and salary.
  3. “Downsizing due to reorganization.” Also, a reason that does not depend on your professionalism, which will certainly be correctly understood by a potential employer, even without additional clarifications.

Consider the reasons that should not be indicated in any case, even if it is because of them that you change your place of work:

  1. “Excessive workloads”. It can only be mentioned if you can convincingly prove that the burden was really too heavy.
  2. Conflicts with colleagues. No one wants to get an employee who cannot find common ground with the team.
  3. Conflicts with management. Same. In the best case, a complete analysis of the conflict situation will take place, down to the smallest details. At worst, you will be immediately shown the door. Especially if conflict situations have caused the change of not one job, but two, three or more.
  4. “Due to the reduction, due to the end of the probationary period, due to the crisis.” All three explanations betray you as a bad specialist, even if this is far from the case. The employer initially assumes that you were thrown off, like ballast, at the first opportunity. And it is not a fact that there will be an opportunity to explain.
  5. “Salary in envelopes”. Needless to say, the company you worked for before is tax evasion. The employer will immediately start thinking about what you can tell when you leave his company.
  6. “I have not worked in one place for more than 2-3 years.” Few people need an employee who is ready at any time for no reason to jump off the spot and go to competitors.
  7. “Irregular working hours, poor working conditions.” The company needs workers who are ready to work hard. Ideally, 24 hours a day. Such a reason for being fired on a resume will make a potential boss assume that he is dealing with a lazy person who is afraid of the slightest difficulty. Whether you can convince him otherwise is a question.
